The period of the cold winter months can be the most challenging time to start or continue a fitness training regime. Many people with either drop off or delay the start to a training program. There are two clear directions you can head in this situation in 1) Stop, don't train - continue to and/ or put on extra unwanted kilos, or 2) continue through the winter months, maintaining and even building on current levels of fitness. Both as a personal trainer and trainee myself I have picked up and established certain strategies to make the most of this period.
Work now, prosper in spring
A simple mathematical equation tells us that the better we work during the winter months, the better position we will be come spring time - when motivation is high. If you do the work during winter it will put you into a great position come spring time when it's easy to get your fitness training done.
Take the challenge
Regardless of your training goal you must put in the work to get results. Results based training requires the undefinable quality of mental strength; you must create a bullet proof shield of resistance to thoughts and reasons to stop -such as don't like it, or too hard. So therefore you should actually embrace the challenge of training during the winter months. It's an opportunity to build your resistance shield, rather than a hindrance. Ask yourself the question; are you prepared to do what is required to achieve results from your fitness training?
Be prepared
Be prepared for the cold weather before training with the use of undergarment compression wear, whether underneath shorts while on a run, or upper body if cold coming into an indoor session. Compression garments are simple to add layers on top of in which you can take off an your body warms up.
The vital training component - have a goal
It sounds very cliché, but at the same time the absolute truth; you must have a purpose for your fitness training. The all encompassing goal should be for improved health, given the remote control society of modern day, however you should have a purpose outside of this. When times get tough - and they will, hence the purpose of this article - you will need your purpose to create vision. Whether it be an event, body weight/shape or a target fitness level, you must have a purpose.
Stay healthy
Cold and flu are rampant during the winter months. Training when you are not well will prolong your sickness, so best to cut your losses in that situation and take a rest to allow your body to focus on tackling your sickness. However prevention is better than cure, and if you avoid sickness you will spend less downtime and not hamper your success. Avoid people with colds and flu as much as possible, take an appropriate vitamin supplement, avoid being outdoors in bad weather, and the basics in plenty of sleep and good nutrition.
Regardless of your direction it is only you which will decide and initiate action. Fitness training is a lifelong action of what our bodies are made to do regardless of season.
